Most people know about aquariums and terrariums, but have you ever heard about the other types of vivariums? Vivariums are enclosed spaces (like a tank) that mimic environments like swamps and the sea. Vivariums can be found in Zoos, aquariums, and even houses! There are many different types of Vivariums, but we’re going to be focusing on the 4 most common vivariums; Ripariums, Terrariums, Aquariums, and Paludariums.

Terrariums (Teh-Reuh-Ree-Uhm) usually house fauna and sometimes small animals (like spiders and amphibians). But there are a couple of different types of terrariums; There is a closed terrarium, that usually just houses plants, and then there are terrariums that have opening doors in the front. The latter is used for housing actual animals/insects. Terrariums are mostly dry areas compared to ripariums, aquariums, and paludariums. According to The Difference between Aquarium, Terrarium, Riparium, and Paludarium? – Shrimp and Snail Breeder, Terrariums are generally arid, and rarely have water. Additionally, they don’t require Co2 (Carbon dioxide) shots. Carbon dioxide shots help raise the PH levels of plants which help defend the plant from necrosis, or basically, plant rot.

Ripariums (Rip-Rar-Ium) are similar to paludariums, but they’re more like beaches than swamps. Ripariums are normally designed to mimic a shoreline or the side of a river or brook. Ripariums don’t really have big areas of land around them, but they are usually covered by plants. According to What Is A Riparium? | BeChewy, covered ripariums don’t use as much water, so they are a lot cheaper in places going through a drought (like California.) They also have an unlimited amount of Co2, which makes it so that the leaves of the plants in the riparium grow out and have different colors.

A paludarium (Pa-Loo-Dare-e-Um) is basically a terrarium with a body of water in it, or as some people like to call it, aqua-terrarium. To better explain what a paludarium is, an article called Building The Perfect Paludarium Tank, it says, ”This is a semi-aquatic habitat that can house a broad range of terrestrial, aquatic and semi-aquatic plants and animals.”  Paludariums can house a lot of different species, but they can also house plants. An example of a paludarium can be like a swamp or maybe someplace tropical, those two places have land animals and aquatic animals, but it doesn’t necessarily have to look exactly like a swamp. Well, it doesn’t matter how it looks, even if it doesn’t look as cool as you want it to, it’s still a really cool habitat to have in your house.

An aquarium, like many people know, is a habitat that is completely filled with water and its animals mostly consist of fish and other aquatic animals. But it doesn’t only have to house fish, you can also add plants, rocks, and other decorations. Some plants that people add to their aquarium are sometimes real and they can benefit whatever fish you have inside. You should always research the type of fish you might get and what it needs like food, tank size, and water temperature. In an article called,  Tips For Beginners in The Aquarium Hobby, it says, “The best thing you can do before physically starting this hobby is to do your research. Plan out what specific fish or style of tank you want,”.

Vivariums are (all in all,) pretty cool and interesting to learn about, but not easy to take care of. So, if you do ever decide to try owning a vivarium, you should try starting small, unless you can really see yourself being a devoted plant parent.
